Holy Name won't be returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. However, the Green Wave can prevent Cleveland Central Catholic from reaching the promised land for the first time since 1982.

Holy Name (6-3, 4-0) can win the North Coast League White Division with a victory at CCC on Saturday afternoon and crush any hopes the Ironmen (6-3, 3-1) might have of sneaking into the postseason. CCC stands No. 9 in Division IV, Region 13, with both Manchester and LaBraewithin striking distance.

"They are playing for their playoff lives, and we can win the title outright," said Holy Name second-year coach Mark Pinzone. "They have a lot to play for, and so do we. We're happy with our kids, but we've got more steps to take."

Holy Name went 1-9 two seasons ago and 4-6 last year.

  

Holy Name and Rocky River set to square off in girls soccerdistrict final

Holy Name and Rocky River will go at it again on Saturday in the Division II Rocky River district final. It will be played at St. Ignatius at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to a regional semifinal at Brush High on Wednesday.

Holy Name, ranked No. 3 in the final Ohio coaches poll, (12-3-3) put an end to Rocky River's undefeated season on Nov. 5, scoring the game's only goal in the final minute.

The Green Wave (12-3-3) advanced to the final with a 2-0 victory against Buckeye on Wednesday.

The Pirates (16-1-1), who were in a tie with Maumee for fifth in the final poll, had a much tougher time advancing as they held off West Shore Conference rival Bay in a shootout on Wednesday.

Looming for Saturday's winner is a possible meeting against top-ranked Walsh Jesuit, a 9-0 winner against Aurora.

The Warriors (16-0-2), dropping down after winning last year's Division I championship, host Revere (13-2-3) in the Kent district final on Saturday at 5 p.m. That winner goes to the regional semifinal at Ravenna.

Football roundup: Independence, HolyName, Normandy earn victories

Holy Name cruised past Villa Angela-St. Joseph, 46-21, for its fifth straight win.

The Green Wave improve to 6-3 overall heading into their regular season finale at Cleveland Central Catholic on Oct. 29.

Quarterback Jake Schaefer completed 11-of-15 passes for 277 yards and five touchdowns. Joe Duff caught five passes for 166 yards and two scores and Dan Cunningham had four catches for 97 yards and three scores.

Schaefer’s touchdown passes went for 54, 82, 25, 3 and 20 yards. Holy Name trailed, 7-6, in the first quarter before rattling off 40 unanswered points.

Duff also added a 56-yard interception return in the third quarter. Running back R.J. Frazierscored on a 26-yard run in the opening quarter to give the Green Wave a 12-7 lead.

Frazier added three solo tackles and a fumble recovery.

Cleveland Central Catholic is coming off a 46-7 win over Trinity.

Cross Country roundup: Independence High School boys win district title

A handful of Padua and Holy Name runners advance to the regional cross country meet following the Division II district tournament at Lorain County Community College.

Holy Name’s Therese Thomason was first overall in the girls race with a time of 21:18.61. Padua’s Evan Bialosky was third overall with a time of 17:46.81.

Also placing in the top 16 and advancing to the regionals were Holy Name’s Bradley Karn(18:38.51; 12th) and Padua’s Ryan Seballos (18:54.91; 16th), Regina Jakubowski (22:45.89; fourth), Michelle Komorowski (22:48.53; fifth), Sara Chmielewski (23:39; 11th) and Jackie Morell (24:15.23; 15th).

Also competing for Padua’s boys were Jake Michalakes (19:03.26; 20th), Peter Krafcik(19:24.33; 31st), Scott Kanta (19:37.26; 43rd), Tyler Szuch (19:53.06; 50th) and Jesse Kowalski (20:15.88; 57th).

Holy Name’s Kevin Masella was 26th (19:16.50), followed by Brian DePauw (19:33.67; 38th),David Terschak (19:34.44; 39th), Joseph Stibley (20:43.57; 63rd), James Klosz (21:30.25; 81st) and Nicholas McDaniel (21:30.99; 82nd).

Also competing for the Padua girls were Izzy Hanna (24:26.53; 19th) and Renee Kraft(26:37.03; 38th).

Holy Name’s Olivia Braude finished 25th (25:11.59), followed by Quinn Whisler (25:17.45; 26th),Kayla Becka (25:32.11; 28th), Abby Miller (25:43.93; 29th), Allison Trouten (26:01.16; 31st) and Deborah Dollard (26:10.54; 33rd).
