Baldwin-Wallace men upset No. 4 Marietta: NE Ohio College Roundup
Published: Sunday, December 04, 2011, 1:12 AM     Updated: Sunday, December 04, 2011, 1:14 AM
Kevin Krakowiak (Holy Name) scored a season-high 17 points and Grant Fairhurst scored a season-high 16 to lead Baldwin-Wallace to an upset of No. 4 Marietta in Division III men's college basketball Saturday in Berea.
Fairhurst sank 5-of-9 3-pointers, Krakowiak made 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and B-W (4-1, 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from long distance.
Kevin Knab (Lakewood) of Marietta (4-1, 0-1) led all scorers with 27 points.
SPORTSINK.COM STAFF REPORT
December 7, 2011
HOLY NAME 45, CLOVERLEAF 40. At Westfield Township, junior Robby Buckwald scored 15 points to lead the way for the Colts (0-2).
Cloverleaf led 25-23 at half and was done in by a 2-point third quarter. The Colts also led at the break in their opener at Wooster.
James Krakowiak had 21 points for Holy Name.
Padua holds off late Holy Name rally
Tom Hamzik, Padua Team Reporter, December 09, 2011 3:54 p.m.
The Padua vs. Holy Name rivalry was renewed on the ice rink Thursday night, with the Bruins besting the Green Wave, 5-4.
After the Bruins took an early 4-0 lead backed by goals by Seniors Mike Palasics (2), Chris Yamnitsky, and Jared Bogdan, Holy Name stormed right back with four of their own to tie it up at four with 3:58 to play.
"In the third period I feel that our guys sat back in the chair and allowed Holy Name to gain the momentum. This caused them to tie it up," said Padua Head Coach Sean Evans. "However, we called a time out with 3:58 to go in the 3rd and our Senior leadership is finally coming to the surface."
Padua's team is centered around a core of twelve seniors, but it was Junior Kris Aigner who netted the game winning goal with 3:13 left in the game. The goal was assisted by Seniors Palasics and Bogdan.
Bruin Junior Rob Beran held his own in the goal, recording 21 saves on the evening.
"Robby played a great game but our team needs to realize that we need to play 45 minutes every game," said Evans. "My coaching staff executed our game plan and we were successful."
The slate does not get any easier for Padua, as they face Red North Rivals University School (Friday December 9th) and St. Ignatius (Saturday December 10th) in the upcoming days.
"We're trying to dig ourselves out of a slump that started two weeks ago," said Evans. "The boys are working hard everyday and still learning."

Padua and Holy Name clash tonight
Tom Hamzik, Padua Team Reporter, December 09, 2011 3:54 p.m.

Tom Hamzik, Padua Team Reporter, December 09, 2011 4:08 p.m.
Padua and Holy Name have been playing each other for more than three decades now. The two catholic schools are separated by just a few miles across Parma, and will meet again tonight at Padua for a battle on the hardwood.
The Bruins, 1-0, knocked off Normandy 61-46 last Friday in their opener. The Green Wave, 1-1, opened with a 64-48 loss to North Royalton last week but rebounded with a 45-40 win over Cloverleaf on Tuesday.
Padua is led by a tandem of Junior guards in Tyler Ptacek and Matt Milliken. SeniorsJim Solano, Zak Baumer, and Junior Chris Link round out the starting five for the Bruins.
"We have been working really hard all week for this game," said Milliken. "We have really been working on our defense especially."
In contrast, Holy Name is a senior laden with ten seniors on the roster. Guards Jake Schaefer and Joe Duff in addition to Forwards James Krakowiak and Dan Dreherare all leading contributors for the Green Wave.
The rivalry has produced some memorable games in past years, as last season the Bruins beat the Namers 58-55 in overtime during the regular season, but Holy Name avenged the loss with a 41-38 win in the OHSAA District Tournament.
"As soon as you get out of that locker room and step on the court and see and hear everyone in the gym you can feel the intensity of the rivalry and realize how big it really is," commented Milliken about the rivalry.
Tip off will be at 7:30pm tonight inside Padua Gymnasium.
