Girls basketball: Holy Name clinches NCL White Division crown

 , February 10, 2012 9:25 a.m.

Holy Name (13-6, 9-0 North Coast League) clinched the NCL White Division crown despite losing sophomore Kim Cook early in the season to a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

"Shannon Day and Rachel Kucharczyk are scoring 6.5 points a game and have picked up the scoring in place of Cook," Holy Name coach Kim Jones said. "Erica Davis has picked up the rebounding with 5.6 boards a game.

"Rachel's a sophomore and Erica's a freshman and that will only help us next year after Day and Taylor Krusinski graduate."

Krusinski, a Mercyhurst recruit, is averaging 19.2 points and six rebounds per game and they'll need her to step up even more if the third-seeded Green Wave is to survive the Division II sectional/district tournament at Elyria, where Keystone and Rocky River are the top two seeds.

"Our division in the NCL is pretty competitive," Jones said. "Teams come to play, and play hard every night."

Parma Heights Holy Name High School opens new library media center

Published: Sunday, February 05, 2012, 8:30 AM

PARMA HEIGHTS -- In an era when students have to compete on a global scale, Holy Name High School has taken a giant step in that direction.

The newly opened Ferrante Library Media Center, named after Tony Ferrante (class of 1948), provides the school’s 651 students with 33 new laptop computers and 10 iPads.
In addition to the computers, the center, built at a cost of $225,000, will have an instructional classroom and a soon-to-be-completed TV production room and control room for in-school broadcasts.
Sister Paul Greggila, the library media specialist, has seen the school’s library evolve from shelves of books to include this latest technology, which puts the world literally at the students’ fingertips.
“The availability of technology — iPads, laptops, Nook e-readers and iMacs — offer students the opportunity to access current information for research as well as topics of interest,” Greggila said.
“The adjacent library media center classroom offers a flexible environment in which tables can be reconfigured for group work, instructional activities on the SMART board or individual projects on laptop computers,” she said.
“This classroom can be used for library media instruction or by teachers needing a more flexible setting than the standard classroom,” she said.

Kim Luthman-Jones, head girls basketball coach and a history teacher at the school, is thrilled with the new “tools” at her disposal as a teacher.
“We live in a technological world,” Luthman-Jones said. “Kids would much rather read and look up information on an iPad than read it in a book, in my opinion.
“With the iPads, apps have been created specifically for student use. Many apps are even free, and if they aren’t free, they are still a lot cheaper than buying a book.
“This is particularly true for (advance-placement) world history, which I teach. If students don’t have an iPad or purchased study materials, they are accessible here in the media center.”
The funds to build the center were donated by alumni in a capital campaign that raised approximately $260,000.
Holy Name High School will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014, and this is certainly a way to prepare for its future as a college preparatory school.

Sports Boosters Need Volunteers, please help!

Hosting CYO BBall is a major revenue generator for the HN Athletic Boosters. As a result of alot of peoples hard work, HN has been awarded additional CYO BBall playoffs games this season. Staffing for the concession stand for the regular season has gone very well and thanks to DeeDee Koenig for her help on that but we seem to be a bit short on volunteers for the CYO BBall playoff games.

We are looking for volunteers to staff the concession stand (in the new gym) on the following days:

Saturday, 2/4 - 12PM to 4PM. This is the last of the regular season weekends.

Sunday, 2/12, 4 games: Concession staff and gate workers (gate workers - usually 1 or 2 at a time, may also be taking money for CYO tee shirts)

Saturday, 2/18, 8 games, begins at 09:00: Concession staff and gate workers

Sunday, 2/25, 6 games, begins at 10:00: Concession staff and gate workers

Saturday, 2/26, 4 games: Concession staff and gate workers

Saturday, 3/3, 6 games, begins at 10:00: Concession staff and gate workers

Please contact DeeDee Koenig at ddkoenig@zoominternet.net if you can help.

Thanks.

March for Life

Colleen Corrigan Day '88
Tuesday March 24, 2012

Thirty-nine students from Holy Name High School attended the 39th annual March for Life in Washington D.C. on Monday Jan. 23, 2012.  After traveling all night the students attended the 7:30 Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception where thousands of Catholics joined Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan (Archbishop of New York and President, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) to pray for the end to abortion and a renewed focus on a culture of life.

After Mass, students joined Catholics from all over the country at the site of the National Pro-Life Rally and listened to speakers and testimonies on the importance of the dignity of the human life and defending those with no voice.  Students marched approximately two hours from “the Mall” to the Supreme Court building joining other Catholics as witnesses to life.

Holy Name Junior Caitlyn Welsh said this about the experience “It was amazing to see so many people in Washington willing to do God’s will and defend life.  It is so important for all of us young and old to speak for the unborn and promote the fact that all life is worth defending.”
