Holy Name baseball team looking to reload

From  By Steve Novak | Correspondent

Holy Name baseball coach Dennis Markiewicz said goodbye to a dozen members of last year’s team when they graduated last spring.

It was a big loss, but Markiewicz is well supplied with a new group of seniors, as well as several underclassmen who already have varsity experience.

Three seniors who will see a lot of playing time in the outfield this season are Brett Jajgenich, Dan Cunningham and Alex Kurowski. All three are returners to the team from last year.

So that opposing scorekeepers won’t be totally confused, take note that Holy Name also has another Dan Cunningham. This Dan Cunningham is a junior, and he is no relation to the senior of the same name. The junior Cunningham is also an outfielder.

Junior Alan Medovic will see lots of playing time at third base. The shortstop position will reside heavily with senior Gordy Egan. Junior Tyler Sullivan is a second baseman, while Kurowski and junior Steve Boden will share time at first base.
Holy Name will have to fill the shoes of departing pitcher Brett Sullivan.

The pitching corps includes senior Joe Duff, Boden, junior Dave Javor, senior Kyle Rees and senior Mike Mayer. The catcher is junior Matteo Veechuk.

Last season under Markiewicz, Holy Name (20—4) made it all the way to Division II state semifinals before losing to Akron Hoban by a score of 3-2.

Markiewicz said that despite losing a high number of his starters, he expects the Green Wave to again be a team to be reckoned with.

“We’ll be right there again. We’ll surprise people,” he said. “Our strength is our defense, but we’re going to hit.”

Among the returners from last year’s team, Egan finished the season with a batting average above the .400 mark, while both Sullivan and Kurowski hit above the .300 level.

On March 31, Holy Name is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Westlake. On April 2, the team has a 5 p.m. contest at Cleveland Central Catholic.

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Two Bowling Green State University sorority sisters from Greater Cleveland remained in critical condition Saturday evening with injuries suffered in a head-on collision on Interstate 75 early Friday.
Angelica Mormile
Angelica Mormile, 19, of Garfield Heights, a freshman telecommunications major who graduated last spring from Holy Name High School, and Kayla Somoles, 19, of Parma, a sophomore majoring in middle childhood education and a graduate of Normandy High School, were taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo after the accident just north of Bowling Green.

Holy Name's Jim Klosz heading to state wrestling tournament

 Published: Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 5:18 PM

Holy Name wrestler Jimmy Klosz will be in familiar territory when he walks onto the mat at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus this weekend.

It’s not like the 145-pound senior wrestler has never been there before. Last year, he finished in third place in Division II finals in Columbus.

Last week, Klosz finished second at the Division II districts at Marion Harding, earning him another berth to the state finals.

Klosz won the first three of his matches at the district meet, earning him a spot in the title bout at 145 pounds. However, he lost his final match of the tourney, losing a 6-5 decision to Blake Kastl of Graham Local.

Going into state competition this weekend, Klosz has a season record of 39 wins and four losses. He said his four year record of competition at Holy Name shows him so far with a career record of 154 wins and 23 losses.

Klosz also won an individual championship in the North Coast League each of his four years at Holy Name.
In a recent interview, Klosz said that during the 2011-2012 season, one of the moves he has tried to improve is the single leg takedown.

“In working with my coaches, one of the things they noticed was I was hesitant to use it,” he said. “So, I’ve been working with them to minimize my hesitancy.”
