HN Football Rank #1 in NCL White Division

High school football conference previews for Northeast Ohio teams for 2012 season (NCL White Division Breakdown)

, August 22, 2012
WHITE DIVISION
PD projected finish
1. Holy Name (7-3 overall, 5-0 league in 2011)
2. Central Catholic (6-4, 3-2)
3. Warren John F. Kennedy (5-5, 2-3)
4. St. Peter Chanel (3-7, 2-3)
5. Trinity (1-9, 0-5)
6. Villa Angela-St. Joseph (6-5, 3-2)
Preseason awards
Preseason offensive MVP:
Tavion Pauldo, Central Catholic, QB, Jr., 6-1, 160.
Preseason defensive MVP:
Brionne Duke, St. Peter Chanel, DB/QB, Sr., 5-10, 165.
Preseason most valuable lineman:
Mike Setta, Holy Name, OL, Sr., 5-8, 205.
Other key players: Devon Bolden, VASJ, RB, Sr., 5-9, 160; Antonio Capasso, Trinity, LB, Jr., 5-10, 215; Will Davis, Holy Name, TE/LB, Jr., 6-2, 205; John Egizii, Holy Name, LB, Sr., 6-0, 185; Rodell Golphin, St. Peter Chanel, RB/CB, Jr., 5-7, 145; Andre Husain, Holy Name, WR/DB, Sr., 5-7, 155; Charles Miller, St. Peter Chanel, OT/LB, Sr., 6-2, 225; Dominic Naples, JFK, QB/DB, Sr., 5-10, 155; Royce Sawyer, Trinity, RB/DB, Sr., 5-10, 180; Robert Seger, JFK, WR/DB, Sr., 6-0, 170; Gregory Snyder, Central Catholic, WR, Sr., 6-2, 175; Lloyal Stokes, Central Catholic, DT, Sr., 6-1, 390.
Outlook: Holy Name came on strong under coach Mark Pinzone and looks to continue as he enters third season in revamped program. Good numbers add depth with six returnees on offense. QB Allan Medovic gets to lead offense. Running the conference slate once again is not out of the question. For a second straight season, a late fade prevented Central Catholic from reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1982. That could change this year with a good mix of veterans returning on both sides of the ball. Pauldo passed for 1,000 and ran for 200. Strong fronts on both sides can make for a good run. Depth is a huge variable. Warren JFK had its moments during first year in the league and eight defensive starters return. Chanel has not made the playoffs since 2007. Second-year coach Brad Demmerle welcomes back 17 starters, nine on offense. Duke accounted for 1,000 yards, passing for 650, and seven touchdowns. Modest totals look to improve as experienced group of receivers return. Junior quarterback Aaron Ivory adds depth. Numbers always pose a problem. Trinity returns 10 junior starters, who gained tons of experience a year ago. Numbers are a concern with 38 players on the squad, so depth is sketchy at best. It is a rebuilding job for coach John Storey at VASJ as the Vikings, who earned a spot in the Division VI playoffs, return just one starter on each side of the ball.
Top 3 games: Oct. 6, Warren JFK at Holy Name; Oct. 13, Central Catholic at Holy Name; Oct. 27, Warren JFK at Central Catholic.

Maria Ramos of Holy Name High School thrives on challenges, community service

By Tom Feran, The Plain Dealer

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Maria Ramos ranks first in her class at Holy Name High School, a position she has maintained for four years with a grade-point average above 4.5. She has earned numerous scholarships and academic honors.
But the 17-year-old from Independence also exemplifies the adage that much of life's education takes place outside the classroom.
As a junior, she was one of 50 area students selected for the Cleveland Leadership Center's year-long "Look Up to Cleveland" leadership program. It took her inside such places as Cleveland City Hall and the Federal Reserve Bank, introduced her to movers and shakers, and fired her interest in bolstering the city's standing as a prosperous and exciting place.
"I'm really looking forward to what Cleveland is becoming," she said. "It's a medical and science hub. The hospitals are insanely good."
Maria's interest in those fields was deepened by what she calls her "summer I'll never forget" last year in the Cleveland Clinic's selective science internship program.
My Motivation Through High SchoolMy Motivation Through High SchoolWatch video
Typically, she thrived on the "vacation" schedule of leaving for South Pointe Hospital after 6 each morning, while also working at her year-round clerical job at Northeast Surgical Associates.
She now is counting down the days until she starts classes at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She hasn't picked her major, but the sciences are favorite subjects, and her plan is to go on to medical school and become a pediatrician.
She has prepped for that, too, as a babysitter since seventh grade.
For all of her achievements, however, "Maria's truly remarkable acts have come in the community," said her guidance counselor, Jason Gerrick. "Volunteer and community work provided Maria with opportunities to help others and give something back."
She has volunteered for four years at the food kitchen at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ohio City, serving dinners and washing dishes -- and where she heard about a program sending boxes of toiletries to U.S. soldiers abroad.
Wanting to do something locally, Maria co-founded Shoeboxes for Souls, a service project that buys and bundles personal items for the men sheltered at St. Herman's House of Hospitality.
She has tutored elementary school students and underclassmen at Holy Name, and has been an enthusiastic weekly volunteer for four years at Red Circle Lanes, assisting the disabled adults who bowl there.
"It's an amazing experience -- I love doing it," she said.
With a range of interests as wide as her smile, she has resumed the art lessons she started at 10, working in charcoal and pastels. While she's "not a jock," she has played volleyball and intramural basketball.
She credits the support of her parents, Fred and Cheryl Ramos, for what she has accomplished, and the admired example of her older brother, Michael.
"The harder you work," she said, "the more opportunity you have."

Alumni Golf Outing

HN Eugene T. Krakowiak Alumni Golf Outing
Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Mallard Creek Golf Course will again be the site of the annual Eugene T. Krakowiak Golf Outing. The big event will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. The outing, known throughout the Cleveland area as one of the best, will again be limited to 40 foursomes. As in the past, a continental breakfast served between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. will start off the day, with golfers being called to their carts at 8:15 a.m. Tee off (shotgun start) will be promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Due to an increase in our expenses, the fee this year will be $110 per person. This includes golf, cart, breakfast, lunch, steak dinner, soft drinks, beer, hole prizes and a valuable gift for each golfer. With the popularity of this outing growing each year, golfers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so please make your reservation early by completing the reservation form included with this article, or by calling Bill Hartman '67 at 440-886-0300 est. 148. We ask that you send your check with your reservation form.

Proceeds from this outing fund the Eugene T. Krakowiak Scholarship fund for needy students. Our goal this year is to increase the number of scholarships from four ($500 each) to six ($500 each). We are again offering businesses, corporations, and individuals a unique way to be a sponsor of the tournament. In addition to "hole sponsorships" for $100 each, a donor can choose one of the following sponsorships: BREAKFAST SPONSOR, LUNCH SPONSOR, OR DINNER SPONSOR (please review the sponsorship form below for more information.) This is an opportunity to advertise your company or show your individual support of Holy Name. Since the $110 golf fee pays for only the golfer's expenses, these sponsorships, and the raffles throughout the day, are the only way we realize a profit on the outing. We need your help in this matter and thank you in advance for your consideration of one of the above sponsors. All donations are tax deductible as defined by law. For more details, please call the Development/Alumni office at 440-886-0300 ext. 148. This outing is open to all alumni (male and female), parents, and friends of Holy Name High School. Looking forward to seeing you on July 11th.
